5 Things to Consider when performing a Sand Ceremony
What is a 'Sand Unity Ceremony'?
If you love beach life and are getting married on the Northern Beaches you should definitely consider including a sand ceremony in your wedding day. Similar to the unity candle, it represents the coming together of two people or two families, symbolised through the pouring of sand from two vases into one.
How to perform Sand Unity Ceremony
Start the ceremony with an ornamental vase containing sand from a place of significance, perhaps where you met. Next take it in turn to pour a layer of sand from a beach of personal importance, maybe where you were born, or where you lived before you met. Then pour your sand together symbolising the blending of your two hands, two hearts, and two lives into one. Just as the grains of sand can never be separated again, so it is believed your lives will be blended together for eternity.
Why I love this
By pouring the sand in this manner a layered effect is formed creating a beautiful, lasting memento to display in your home.
Top 5 Tips
1. Choose a glass vase with a stopper which will make an attractive ornament, if the neck of the vase is narrow you may need a funnel to help pour the sand.
2. The best effect is created when different coloured sand is used, this can easily be achieved through the addition of powdered chalk.
3. Think about who should pour the sand. Sometimes just the couple participate, but children and/or parents can also join in expressing the harmony of the entire family.
4. Practice beforehand, it is important to have the correct amount of sand for the vase and to time the length of pour with the spoken words.
5. Finally, make sure your guests can clearly see the proceedings and it is a nice touch to display the vase at your reception afterwards.
